Approval of Board Minutes

The minutes of July 2008 Board Minutes were approved.

PROGRESS REPORTS

  • Purchase of lavaliere microphone (approved by Board by email in August) Judy Gregorius and Judy Bushell.  The microphone and power box have been taken to Music 6000.  The technician there is checking to see if it can be repaired or needs to be replaced.

  • Building Security on Sundays (Greg King) - Referred to October meeting.  The property task force, led by Greg King and Will Ulry, and including Nancy King and Elaine Ulry,  was praised for the work parties this past month and a half.  Good work!

  • Funeral/Memorial Service Fees  (Judy Gregorius) – Joanne Goodwin, Vern Kunze, Cheri Gonyaw and Judy served on this task force. Other churches were contacted for comparison with our fees.  Some of the wording on the “fee” lists has been revised as well as fees. Referred to October meeting.

  • Facility Improvements as recommended by New Beginnings Consultant – (Greg King) - Referred to October meeting.

  • Music Position  (Elaine Ulry) -  Our current organist has agreed to serve on a long time basis.  Kathleen Alviar has agreed to serve as a Music Coordinator.  This position is not a Director of Music.  Instead, Kathleen will be coordinating various musical individual or groups to enhance our worship service.  Various scenarios of music leaders/organists have been explored over the last several months.  This decision seems to be the right fit for our congregation at this time.

ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION AND/OR DECISION

  • Overflow Shelter:  Shall we allow Westwood Baptist to use our facility to host the Overflow Shelter for two weeks in March?  They would handle all the “duties” and contribute toward the cost of heating the area.   The board supported this request by consensus.  Karen will contact Westwood Baptist.  Helena Wilson has agreed to be the liaison between Westwood and FCC.

  • Camp Quixote:  Shall we approve hosting Camp Quixote again this year for ninety days, beginning in late December or early January.  We would work in conjunction with Temple Beth Hatfiloh.  The board voted in favor of hosting Camp Quixote, with one abstention.  The details will be worked out with Temple Beth Hatfiloh and the Ponza Board.

  • Bell Repair:  The hand bells are in great need of maintenance.  The cost is estimated to be about $2000.00.  There is no money in the budget.  We currently have about $5000.00 in undesignated memorial funds.  Can the maintenance expense be taken from this fund?                It was suggested that we have a special offering to help support this cost. Memorial funds will be used to supplement remaining cost. It was moved and seconded that we follow this suggestion.  The motion passed.

  • Newsletter Publishing Schedule:  Shall we publish a newsletter once per month or bi-monthly? – Judy Gregorius.  Those present agreed to a once a month schedule.  Mary, Sherrie and Judy will set up a schedule so that those writing articles will know when they need to submit articles.

  • New Beginnings Update:  Who is our target group for the new church?  The next New Beginning meeting will be with New Beginning leaders and Board Members to take our next step in this process.  There was some discussion as to who our target group would be.  We found that we don’t know what that is at this time!

  • Budget:  Shall we appoint a task force to examine alternate ways of building a budget?  Pastor’s mileage needs to be addressed.  This was referred to the October Meeting.

REPORTS

Pastor:  Mary reported that she is meeting with people who are newer to our church .  The group met in June and will meet again in October.  “When we got this group together in June we discovered that our congregations’ interest/concern for justice issues and concern for persons who are poor was the reason our newer persons have continued to come to worship!”
